Set on a waterfront block within the gated Island Estates at Clear Island Waters, at the end of a quiet cobblestone cul-de-sac, this family residence had an ageing pool area, dated finishes and difficult access to the rear of the property. Much of the backyard was underused and awkward to enjoy, and the brief was to turn it into a modern space built for entertaining.
In eight short weeks, Lynx Landscaping delivered a fully renovated and planted outdoor space. Working through the difficult rear access first, the project brought together a full renovation of the pool area, new retaining that extended the usable space, and modern planting, all shaped by a considered landscape design. The finished backyard is now a functional and refined outdoor area for the family to enjoy.
The existing outdoor space presented several challenges. The old pool area and dated finishes made the backyard feel tired and left much of the space underused.
Access to the rear of the property was also difficult, which limited how the space could be used and complicated any work at the back of the block.
The goal was to reimagine the area into a usable, modern space for entertaining, while improving access to the rear and making the most of the available footprint.
A considered landscape design was developed to resolve the access issue, modernise the pool area and extend the usable space. The key elements of the plan included:
Work began by resolving the access problem, as it was the constraint shaping everything else on the site. Two new concrete access points were constructed at the rear, allowing the previously difficult-to-reach area to be worked on and incorporated into the finished outdoor space.
With access improved, the pool area was fully renovated with a stunning mixture of pebblecrete and mosaic tile. Updated finishes and materials replaced the dated surfaces, giving the pool and its surrounds a modern, refined look that anchors the backyard.
New retaining walls were introduced to extend the usable area beside the home, creating additional space for outdoor entertaining. The planting throughout was updated with a modern selection to soften the space and complete the contemporary finish. The result was led throughout by a considered landscape design, which brought the pool, materials, structure and planting together as one coordinated outcome rather than a series of separate upgrades.
The completed backyard is now a modern, functional space designed for entertaining and everyday enjoyment. The once underused area, held back by an ageing pool and difficult access, has been reimagined into a refined outdoor environment that works for the whole family. Glass fencing preserves waterfront views and ensures a clean aesthetic, while tropical planting and outdoor lighting provide the finishing touches to make the backyard a more usable space.
This project shows how resolving practical issues first, in this case access and structure, can create the foundation for a more functional and considered outdoor space.
